Got Results – Now What?

Birmingham, Alabamaโ€”January 2019. Planning an evaluation, collecting data, analyzing results, and preparing a report of the results is not the end of the process. The programโ€™s results must be communicated, with very specific reasons, to the proper audiences. Recently, weโ€™ve received inquiries about how to communicate results to various groups, particularly the C-suite and executive groups. Additionally, we have had requests about how to utilize technology when reporting results and how to summarize large amounts of data into a one-page graphic.

According to Jack Phillips, chairman of ROI Institute, โ€œReporting results occurs at the end of any type of evaluation model. Although there can be many reasons for reporting results of programs to various audiences, there are four main reasons.

  1. Show the progress made or disappointments realized to various stakeholders.
  2. Making the programs better, even when the results are positive. This is black box thinking.
  3. Highlight challenges and opportunities in the overall learning and talent development space, as these results show a profile of success and possibilities.
  4. Use the results to increase or at least maintain the investment in talent development. This may be the ultimate reason for reporting results.โ€

โ€œFortunately, there is much help available for communicating results to key stakeholders,โ€ added Patti Phillips, president and CEO of ROI Institute and board chair of the Center for Talent Reporting. โ€œThe Center for Talent Reporting (CTR) is a nonprofit dedicated to helping organizations with the important task of reporting on talent development. Part of this process is their talent development standards. CTRโ€™s work aligns well with the new ISO Human Capital Reporting Standards, which positions it and its members for whatโ€™s ahead. ROI Institute is a founding member of the organization. We are proud to be affiliated with CTR and look forward to helping it continue to advance its mission.โ€ For more information on the profile and benefits of becoming a member of CTR, click here.

โ€œAs a special celebration of our relationship with CTR, we are providing free conference registrations to the first 20 of our valued clients who register for the CTR Conference and use the coupon code ROI799,โ€ Patti Phillips announced. โ€œWe would also encourage you to download CTRโ€™s Introduction to Talent Development Reporting principles (TDRp).โ€ Click here to register for the conference, and click here to download the document.

CTRโ€™s 6th annual CTR Week and Conference will be held in Dallas, TX, February 18-22, 2019.

CTR has also provided the full white paper, which covers all aspects of TDRp in L&D and HR. This 50-page document provides insight and in-depth, comprehensive discussion of topics including effectiveness measures, isolating learningโ€™s impact from other factors, and details on the guiding principles of executive-level L&D reporting. One of the biggest challenges is how to communicate program results to the senior executive roles. With a large learning and talent development function, there is a tremendous amount of data collected during the month, quarter, or year. Condensing that down to data the executives really want to see is an important task. Typically, executives are only concerned about the impact of the programs and possibly the ROI of certain projects.

โ€œRecently, I conducted a webinar organized by CTR on reporting results that executives will love,โ€ said Jack Phillips. โ€œThis is now available as a download. The webinar provides tips and techniques for showing all types of data and building a macrolevel scorecard to show the results from all your programs.โ€ Click here to download the video.
