Six Ways to Participate in ROI Certification

Birmingham, AL โ€“ ROI Institute has announced additional ways to become certified in the

ROI Methodology. In todayโ€™s economy, time and budget constraints make it difficult to develop serious capability for evaluation. At the same time, the skills involved in showing the value of your programs and projects are needed now more than ever.

โ€œThe ROI Methodology has become the most-used evaluation system in the world,โ€ explained Dr. Jack Phillips, Chairman, ROI Institute. โ€œThis is the result of more than 5,000 professionals completing the requirements to become Certified ROI Professionals (CRP), which requires the actual use of the methodology to evaluate an actual program or project.โ€

Several new options to build the capability are now available. An organization sending one person (or a team) to attend a five-day ROI Certification workshop with the goal of implementing the ROI Methodology is an approach most organizations take when they want serious evaluation capability. Now, there are six ways to participate in ROI Certification.

  1. Individual and Team Participation in the Five-Day Certification Workshop
This is still the standard approach where participants attend a public five-day session. This approach includes preparing for ROI Certification with pre-work, attending the live session, receiving a workbook and materials, virtual assistance to help with your ROI evaluation project, and taking advantage of the right to reproduce and use our materials within in your organization (with proper credit).
  2. Coaching for ROI Certification
Coaching has taken its place as an important way for people to learn and apply. Under the direction of a professional ROI coach and through interactive, collaborative dialog participants stay focused to complete their ROI evaluation project. With this option, an ROI coach will be assigned to participants before they attend the ROI Certification five-day session. The coach will initiate a series of sessions to guide participants through the completion of their first ROI study. The coach will provide a minimum of eight hours and a maximum of 24 hours of direct time to each participant in the coaching process. The ROI Certification completion rate is doubled with the coaching option. Because of the resources required to provide expert coaching on ROI, the cost is two times the public certification registration fee.
  3. Internal ROI Certification
More organizations are switching to an Internal ROI Certification where ROI implementation involves larger numbers from different functional areas. When the number of participants reaches eight, it usually becomes more cost effective to consider an internal certification. When the number reaches 15 to 20, the fee per person is about half the public ROI Certification fee.

In addition to cost savings and efficiency, internal certification allows participants in the organization to concentrate on their situation, programs, and projects while maintaining confidentiality. An internal focus is not only helpful for developing skills but is also helpful for mapping out the ROI implementation. This is particularly important when the manager or executive responsible for the team is involved and decisions can be made during the workshop about building capability and awareness, the use of technology, the preferred methods of data collection, roles and responsibilities, and reporting results.

  1. Three-Day Option for ROI Certification
For individuals who have attended a two-day ROI workshop, either offered by another organization, such as the Association for Talent Development (ATD), or through ROI Instituteโ€™s online academy, a three-day option is available. If an individual attends a two-day workshop conducted by ROI Institute faculty, we will credit the fee toward certification fee.
  2. Test and Submit
While there is no substitute for attending live sessions where there is much discussion and interactive dialog, some participants are unable to travel and, instead, embark on a self-study program. There is no coaching or support provided with this option, but there are only two steps needed to achieve certification. First, for a nominal fee, the individual can take a 75-item test about their knowledge of the ROI Methodology. The participant must pass the test to proceed. If this is successful, then an individual can submit an ROI study for approval. For another fee, the study will be evaluated for final approval. The study review will provide feedback for adjustments only once. If the subsequent and final study meets the standards of ROI Institute, certification will be granted.
  3. Guided Self-Study Program
Some individuals prefer to learn in a guided self-study environment. This option includes a combination of reading and online learning offered through ROI Institute. Guided by an ROI facilitator, the individual reads the materials, books, and case studies; prepares assignments; completes the exercises; takes an exam; submits an impact study; and ultimately achieves certification. Essentially, ROI Certification can be granted by paying a fee, completing the self-study program, completing a comprehensive exam, and submitting an ROI study along with some evidence of implementation in the organization.

โ€œWe have explored and fine-tuned these options at the request of our clients,โ€ added Dr. Patti Phillips, President and CEO of ROI Institute. โ€œThey represent feasible ways to achieve ROI Certification while maintaining a standard suitable for this type of certification.โ€

โ€œROI implementation can make a big difference not only in the funding and budget for the function, but in executive respect, support, commitment, and involvement,โ€ added Jack Phillips. When executives see the business contribution, they often perceive your function as an investment instead of a cost, which can easily be cut, particularly in difficult times. If they see an investment that is positive, they are more likely to continue the budget.

Patti Phillips summarized, โ€œWhen it comes to showing the value of your programs:

  • Hope is not a strategy.
  • Luck is not a factor.
  • Doing nothing is not an option.

Be proactive. Begin the ROI journey.โ€
