From time to time, colleagues and clients will contact us regarding processes and models that are knockoffs of our ROI Methodologyยฎ. Our reaction is not usually one of alarm, but one of silent pleasure โ€“ itโ€™s a compliment when someone takes your process, makes some adjustments, and claims it belongs to them. As Oscar Wilde has been quoted, โ€œImitation is the sincerest form of flattery.โ€  However, it does create confusion in the marketplace.

In India, a company called Greenbooks claims that they are experts of ROI. They offer a two-day workshop called โ€œMeasuring ROI in LD and HRD.โ€ The objectives for this workshop are taken word-for-word from our workshop materials, without permission. In Lebanon, Tamayyaz offers a two-day workshop measuring ROI in L&D using our materials without our permission.  In Saudi Arabia, a person offers evening courses based on the โ€œJack Phillips ROI Methodology.โ€ He admits that heโ€™s never used the Methodology, but he has read the book and is now teaching others.

Our concern in all three of these examples is that they have never applied the process to evaluate a project and may be misrepresenting the process and misinforming participants. Also, in all three cases, the facilitators are not ROI Certified. We see this same behavior from others in the United States, Thailand, Australia, South Korea, Poland, and other countries.

Jane Massy and Jeremy Harrison in the United Kingdom have taken our ROI Methodologyยฎ, made some adjustments, and call it โ€œEvaluating Human Capital.โ€ Their approach follows our approach with the exception of a few tweaks. While they do acknowledge our work and thank us for our contribution to their process (although, we really didnโ€™t), their commercial gain from our effort is somewhat disturbing.

In Canada, Lynette Gillis and Allan Bailey have taken our ROI Methodologyยฎ and reworked it, labeling it โ€œThe Learning Value Chain.โ€ This title is taken from the name of our original alignment model and our book, The Value of Learning, which was published by Wiley in 2007.

Lisa Edwards, in the United States, has created a โ€œCoaching with ROIโ€ process that she claims is โ€œthe worldโ€™s leading system for measuring the effectiveness and value of coaching,โ€ yet she only created it in 2017. Lisaโ€™s only basis for making such a claim is that we put her name on our book, Measuring the Success of Coaching โ€“ which describes our ROI Methodologyยฎ applied to coaching. While she never references the book or our work when pitching her methodology, we routinely receive calls from clients and partners who are concerned that 1) she has lifted our intellectual property; and 2) that she does not do it justice, putting the validity of our process at risk.

We have worked very hard to create the most successful evaluation system in the world, and we have accomplished that goal. We have approximately 30 federal governments that have endorsed the ROI Methodologyยฎ. The latest endorsement is from the Tunisian government, which will formally announce the endorsement in September 2018. We have many large NGOs that have endorsed our work, such as the United Nations, which endorsed the ROI Methodologyยฎ ten years ago as described in a UN General Assembly resolution and in the UN System Staff College Annual Report. More than three-fourths of Fortune 500 companies use this Methodology in one or more functions in their organizations. Approximately 150 colleges and universities across the world use this Methodology as a course for students or institutionally to measure the ROI of processes or external programs, including prestigious universities such as Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Pennsylvania State University, and University of California, Berkley. More than 300 healthcare organizations have also adopted the ROI Methodologyยฎ, such as Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), Scripps Health, Banner Health, and Ascension Health. More recently, applications of the Methodology have moved to nonprofits, associations, foundations, and charitable trusts, as well as other religious organizations.

We have never asked for an endorsement but have received many, and we appreciate each one that has come our way. We have created a credible, user-friendly system that will address the reliability and validity concerns of major researchers and professors. At the same time, it is CEO and CFO-friendly. To have a system that can satisfy those three groups โ€“ users, professors, and CFOs –  is difficult, but we have done it, and we have their support.

And yes, the ROI Methodologyยฎ is the most used evaluation system in the world. We have more than 6,000 Certified ROI Professionals (CRPs), which means that these individuals had to conduct an ROI study that met the standards of our process โ€“ they actually applied it. No other evaluation system can claim that.

Claiming a process is the worldโ€™s leading system for measuring the effectiveness and value of coaching or any other program is a daunting responsibility. Someone may actually believe it and put it to use. Decades of research and application have gone into the development of the ROI Methodologyยฎ. We know the value it offers to an organization. But it is disturbing when others use our names and attempt to make it theirs when they either do not have the competency to do it justice, or they are trying to leverage an existing brand for their personal gain.

When someone makes a claim that their system is the โ€œworldโ€™s leading,โ€ dig a little deeper; ask them basic questions such as: When did you develop it? What is your expertise base? On what theory is it grounded? Who has applied it? Where has its application been published? Ask them for evidence of their claim. It will not take long for you to see that they are not the real deal. For additional information on any of these knockoffs, or to report other knockoffs in your country or area, please contact Patti Phillips (patti@roiinstitute.net) or Jack Phillips (jack@roiinstitute.net). We are developing a list of the knockoffs.
